Scam warning from South Yorkshire Police

The fraud co-ordination team has issued a warning to local residents about an emerging parcel delivery scam.

In recent weeks, Officers have seen an escalation in parcel fraud whereby local addresses within South Yorkshire are being used for delivery of fraudulently obtained goods.

In this scam, victims from across the country, including Scotland, have purchased items such as mobile phones via adverts posted on social media platforms. On agreeing the purchase, the victim is informed by the buyer that they won't release the funds until they've been given the tracking reference for the parcel to be sent to a South Yorkshire address.

Once the victim posts the parcel, and presents the tracking reference to the buyer, the scammer then shows the seller a fake PayPal confirmation, advising that the payment is pending. However, the payment never goes through.

Whilst genuine South Yorkshire addresses are being supplied as the delivery address, the parcels are being directed to a nearby Post Office or intercepted on route, allowing the scammer to get their hands on the goods, without making payment.

DC Tim Bell, from the fraud co-ordination team, said: "Whilst the addresses being used in this scam have so far been based within South Yorkshire, we are aware of a number of reports from across the country of people who have fallen victim to this scam.

"If you purchase any goods via social media, never post item until you've received payment. Be aware of fake payment notifications from companies such as PayPal - scammers can make confirmation emails, texts and webpages look really convincing.

“I’d really encourage everyone to spread the word about scams like this, and ensure their loved ones know to be vigilant.”

If you think you have been a victim of this scam, report it to Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040 or go online to actionfraud.police.uk.
