Rotherham Council and SteelPhalt have both been praised for their efforts to reduce carbon footprint.
Rotherham Council and SteelPhalt have won the Innovation Award at the 2022 ALARM Risk Awards for its use of carbon negative asphalt in the borough.
The new asphalt has been demonstrated on Broom Lane just outside of the town’s centre and uses a natural binder called Kraft Lignin as well as containing trees, which could reduce the climate impact as the road continues its life cycle.
The initiative is another step taken by Rotherham Council to ensure a greener, carbon neutral future.
Rotherham Cabinet Member for Transport and Environment, Cllr Dominic Beck, said: “The new asphalt is truly an inventive product which will help Rotherham residents to lower their carbon foot-print and have less affect on the environment”.
