BIG SCREEN CELEBRATIONS ANNOUNCED FOR SOUTH YORKSHIRE AHEAD OF KING’S CORONATION

South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority secured funding for the screens through the Department for Culture, Media and Sport.

South Yorkshire will be hosting two big screen events to show the Coronation of His Majesty The King and Her Majesty The Queen Consort in May. The two screens will be put up at The Glass Works in Barnsley and The Peace Gardens in Sheffield and will mean people can come together to celebrate the historic moment.

The Coronation takes place on Saturday 6th May and is being broadcast live by the BBC from Westminster Abbey, where their Majesties will be crowned at the same location as Her Late Majesty The Queen 70 years ago.

South Yorkshire's Mayor Oliver Coppard said: The Coronation will be a truly historic event, celebrated by people across our country, and across the world. So I'm pleased that we'll be able to bring people together in our communities here in South Yorkshire, to witness the crowning of our new King. I know people in our region have huge affection for the Royal Family, and I've no doubt the big screens will prove to be a popular way to engage with such an important moment in our modern history."

South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority secured funding for the screens through the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS), who have confirmed sites across other UK locations. Barnsley Council and Sheffield Council will be announcing more details of the weekend’s activities in due course.

Leader of Sheffield City Council, Cllr Terry Fox said: “The Kings Coronation will be a once in a lifetime moment for many, and so we want this to be a special celebratory occasion in Sheffield. The big screen will allow people from all over the city, and wider, to come and join us, with their friends and family, enjoy the celebrations, have a laugh and some good, patriotic fun!”
